DENTAL IMPLANTS: DIRECTLY INSERTED INTO YOUR JAWBONE

A dental implant is a long-lasting choice as a restorative dental procedure to replace missing teeth. Made up of metallic titanium, they look and feel like natural teeth. Implants are directly inserted in the jaw bone along with an artificial tooth that holds the replacement tooth in place as an anchor.

Your periodontists or oral and maxillofacial surgeons who perform dental implants might suggest dental implants are the right solution for you if:

  • You have one or more missing teeth

  • Have sufficient bone to secure the implants or can have a bone graft

  • No prior health issues that can affect the healing process

  • Want to improve your speech and chewing abilities

  • Refuse to wear dentures

  • Want to improve the esthetics of your smile

DENTAL IMPLANTS PROCEDURE

  • First, your dentist may refer you to a periodontist / oral surgeon.

  • Your periodontists will start with a thorough examination of your mouth and X-rays of your head, jaw and teeth to determine if dental implants are right for you.

  • During the first sitting, your periodontist / oral surgeon will place a post in your jawbone under the gum tissue. It is then stitched back into place. As the tissue heals, the implant will fuse with the bone and attach to the gum.

  • Once the tissues have healed, in the second sitting, your dentist will attach an abutment to the implant, which will connect the replacement tooth to the post. In some cases, both the procedures can be done in a single day too.

  • Next, an artificial tooth made by your dentist is attached to the abutment that might take several appointments to properly fit. If several teeth are needed to be replaced, then a bridge will be anchored to your dental implants.

CROWNS AND BRIDGES: MATCHED TO YOUR NATURAL TOOTH COLOUR

If you have a tooth that has been severely damaged by decay or a fracture, a crown may be the recommended restorative dental procedure. A crown is a cap in the shape of a tooth that is placed over a filled tooth or an implant to strengthen and protect your tooth structure. Your dentist prepares the tooth, takes an impression, and the crown is made in a lab by a specialist. Although there are several materials like porcelain, porcelain fused to metal, or full gold to choose from, the most popular choice is porcelain as it can be matched to the colour of your teeth and improve the aesthetics of your smile.

If several teeth are missing or only one, but an implant can’t be used, a dental bridge is the best option. A bridge is anchored on teeth or implants surrounding the gap. These anchoring teeth around the bridge are called abutment teeth, and the false tooth in between are called pontics. Like crowns, they are made from gold, porcelain, or a combination of these materials and are supported by natural teeth or implants.

The crown and the bridge procedure can be completed in 1-2 dental appointments. Patients taking this path will commonly experience things like tooth sensitivity and general discomfort. These symptoms should disappear once the permanent crown or bridge is placed. If they persist, contact your dentist immediately.

DENTURES: UNIQUE TO YOUR MOUTH’S SHAPE

Do you have missing teeth? Dentures, or prosthetic teeth, may be the solution for you. Dentures are removable teeth that can help your oral system to function properly by replacing the missing teeth and surrounding tissue. There are 2 common types of dentures, both available at our clinic.

  • Partial dentures: They are placed alongside the natural teeth and are used to fill missing space or prevent other teeth from shifting.

  • Complete dentures: They work similarly to partial dentures but are effective when all or a significant number of teeth are missing from their place.

During your initial consultation, we’ll determine your facial dimensions so that we can make impressions of your teeth to create dentures that are unique to your mouth’s shape. Your teeth will then be removed and the dentures will be put securely in place during a subsequent appointment.

Much like your natural teeth, dentures also require proper care and maintenance to be highly durable over time. Make sure to clean them regularly using a soft bristle brush and denture cleaning formula instead of normal toothpaste. It is done to stop harmful bacteria from forming on the dentures and eroding them over time.
